What Happens to Christians Who Accept the Mark of the Beast?

[This is an expansion of thought from a previous post What Actually Happens to Those That Accept the Mark of the Beast?]

In the end-times, the false prophet will try to force everyone on earth to receive the Mark of the Beast (Revelation 13:11-16). The Mark of the Beast, in whatever form it comes, will be a visible, and clearly understood symbol that a person worships the Beast (Revelation 14:9). If they refuse to accept the mark, they will be denied access to food and other essentials (Revelation 13:16), and they will be killed (Revelation 13:15). Then, they will stand as victors before the glorious throne of God (Revelation 15:2), and live and reign with Jesus throughout the millennium (Revelation 20:4).

But, what happens to those who DO accept the Mark of the Beast?

  • They will suffer the wrath of God (Revelation 14:9-10; 16:1-21).
  • They will be tormented and have no peace for the rest of their lives (Revelation 14:11).
  • They will receive extremely painful unceasing sores (Revelation 16:2).
  • They will be scorched with great heat from an intensified sun (Revelation 16:8-9).
  • They will be plummeted with great huge hailstones (Revelation 16:21).
  • They will suffer through catastrophic natural disasters such as: all sea life dies (Revelation 16:3); all fresh water turns to blood (Revelation 16:4-7); and numerous extreme earthquakes (Revelation 6:12; 8:5; 11:13, 19; 16:18). This is all in addition to the worldwide catastrophic events that occur just before the Mark of the Beast is even mandated (Revelation 6:2-8, 12-17).
  • Many will be slain in battle, and their bodies eaten by birds (Revelation 19:17-21).

I don’t really find anything in the Bible about a person losing his salvation for accepting the Mark of the Beast. It would seem likely that there will be many Christians and Jews who do accept the Mark of the Beast out of fear, lack of trust in God, supposed necessity, and rationalized convenience. And since the Antichrist comes posing as the messiah, won’t some Christians simply be deceived (Matthew 24:24), especially since they’ve been taught all their lives that they would be raptured before this happens?

Revelation 13:8 says that only unbelievers will worship the beast, but can we publicly proclaim allegiance to the beast without worshiping him? And, what happens to a Christian who accepts the mark to save his life, or the lives of his family?

Revelation 14:9-11And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

These are the only verses in the Bible that appear to suggest an eternal damnation for anyone who accepts the mark, regardless of their motive. These verses clearly state that anyone who worships the beast and his image, AND receives the mark, will suffer the anger and judgment of God. But, notice that the rising of the smoke of their torment, appears to be a metaphor. And, the words translated “for ever and ever” literally mean a cycle of time, and could mean eternity or could mean for the present age.

This is an often debated subject, and while this view may contradict tradition, it does not take away from the book of Revelation (Revelation 22:19). A public proclamation of allegiance to the beast, would apparently be a public denial of God. And, this would make a person subject to the wrath of God. But nowhere does the Bible clearly say that a person will be eternally damned for receiving the Mark of the Beast.

Lest you think that I am encouraging anyone to go ahead and accept the Mark of the Beast, remember (1.) that I am not a prophet of God, and I might be wrong, and (2.) the rewards for receiving the Mark of the Beast are worse than death.
